Short Story #1
Underlying Truth
Chapter 1
Floating, their whispers on the wind, like dandelion seeds. Swaddled in blankets so tight, eyes wide open, cuddled into the night. Seeking peace down by the stream, lost souls lie beneath glowing moon beams.
"Just one of the many poems I wrote that spring."
"No one cares about the damn poem! Tell us about the girl, if she really even exists."
As you wish. I believe it was 2005, about ten years ago. Yeah, that sounds right. We lived near the swamps of Florida. Her name was Elaine Fowler and we had just turned twenty-one. Ready to have fun as legal adults and toss out those cheaply made fake I.Ds we bought at seventeen. She was my best friend, well.. really she was my only friend. All the kids we grew up with made fun of me when I first moved to town. I thought it was just the harsh reality of puberty but I was absolutely wrong. Elaine was the only person who was decent with me or even acknowledged my existence.
Let me tell you, that girl was known all around. I guess it helped that she was prom queen two years in a row and Miss Florida. There wasn't a single person who didnt adore her. She had it all, winning looks, she was fearless and her spirit was as free as the oxygen we breathe. Her eyes were greener than the most gorgeous leaves of spring. Her hair was long and effortlessly flowing. I remember her dark curls smelling of fresh orange peels. Since then, it's been my favorite scent. I just want to see her one more time.
The one aspect of Elaine's life that I just could not get over, was her boyfriend, Aiden Cain. This dumbass grew up to be the shittiest machanic in Florida. All those drugs he did when we were younger made him the epitome of dumb. And at twenty-one years old, he's still selling dope for his convict father. I just couldn't understand why Elaine loved him so much. She gave him her entire heart and the reason it bugged me so, was because I loved her. I wanted her always and he was there, where I should've been.
"Sounds like you really cared for this chick."
"I did, indeed."
"Why would a girl like.. what's her name?"
"Elaine."
"Yeah, why would Elaine be with a dude that sells drugs?"
"Well buddy, I can't tell you. I mean it might be the fact that her family wasn't so happy and she understood the asshole. She probably felt bad deep down somewhere."
"Did you tell her how you felt for her?"
"Yeah, you had to have tried something."
"I couldn't do that! It would've made our relationship awkward. Then we would've drifted apart. I needed her in my world."
